Serious games och gamification

Using game mechanics in learning can boost participants’ motivation and enhance retention. Gamification works because it activates the brain’s reward system. When we see our progress – through points, levels or achievements – dopamine is released, creating a sense of accomplishment and fuelling the motivation to keep going. Clear feedback and rewards also reinforce the feeling of competence – a key driver of motivation, according to Self-Determination Theory.

Strenghts:

✦ Naturally fosters engagement and persistence in learning

✦ Simple games work well for quick learning or repetition of factual knowledge

✦ More advanced games can build problem-solving skills and strategic thinking

✦ Flow theory shows we learn best when the challenge is just right – we get absorbed, and learning happens almost effortlessly

Things to consider:

🔍 Know your audience – the game should match their preferences, knowledge and context

🔍 The game’s design must fit the purpose – is it about building skills, deepening understanding or reinforcing knowledge?

🔍 Context matters – do learners need a supportive structure (scaffolding) to ensure the experience is meaningful and motivating?

The example shows “Master of Transport”, a serious game about driving and rest time regulations for professional drivers, developed within the FutureDRV project.
